A collaboration between Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA with Dr. Adele DeCruz and Dr. Camaiti of University of Bologna, Bologna Italy stipulates  research into the laser cleaning process for old paintings, enabling the removal of varnishes

I am slated to perform laser cleaning techniques on paintings and other objects utilizing the Laser Er AS application within the same facility as Dr. DeCruz.

At different pulse levels and wavelengths, the encrustations (corrosion) are removed without damage to the object. The removal is due to the wavelength's sensitivity to the OH groups or water in the encrustation.

When the laser pulses come in contact with these groups an instantaneous phase change takes place that transfers the agent from liquid to gas. While that is happening the OH groups attach themselves to the material you want to remove and it removes itself in particles.

The pulse levels are managed based on the material and the corrosion. For example, for paintings the laser is reduced, normally below 20 millijoules. Objects of greater dimensions, thickness, and hardness may require more than 20 MJ.
